It's hard to get out of Suckfish once it's on. You're just suddenly in it, like a silver pinball shot into the screwy Op art lock groove of its cover. The calculated quality of Suckfish is part of its allure. Unlike Nympho, Armand Van Helden's recent foray into sexified disco-punk obviousness, Dear has specifically categorized "Titty Fuck," the fluid, tense "Uvular", and the rest as being separate from himself. You won't see something like the blatant "Just Fucking" on Leave Luck to Heaven 's follow-up. Releasing them under an alias allows Dear to position this material as a separate project, a grand design to get you laid.

With Suckfish, Dear abandons the glitch happiness found in his Jabberjaw alter ego, the percussion workouts of False, and the pop hooks of his eponymous works to deliver a whole new monster: the musical id to his creative consciousness. Audion (and by proxy Suckfish ) is stripped-down techno from the acid era, complete with saw-tinged basslines and a continual focus on dynamics - the art of building tension and inevitable release in the form of sonic explosions.
Label: Spectral Sound. Touring with Berlin techno queen Ellen Allien has had an effect on Detroit soul brother Matthew Dear, for in his Audion guise he's gone all banging techno and mad funky synths. Such is the raw sexuality of these tunes (just look at some of the titles) that one wonders if Dear needs to get out of the studio more - or perhaps invite us over to join the party.

The music is quite different than that of Dear's earlier discs, but it is Mathew Dear music, without question. The first three tracks ("Vegetables," "Your Place of Mine," "T tty F ck") can only be described as brain numbing.
