You Don't Mess Around with Jim is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Jim Croce, released in 1972.

Jim Croce had previously released an album with his wife Ingrid before making his commercial breakthrough with his ABC Records’ debut, 1972’s You Don’t Mess Around With Jim. The album’s title track - about pool shark Big Jim Walker and not Jim Croce the songwriter - and "Operator (That’s Not The Way It Feels)" established Croce as both a great tale spinner and a compassionate and touching singer-songwriter. But his true emotive connection came with Time In A Bottle, a song that would shoot to on the pop charts after Croce’s tragic death in a plane crash in 1973.

The "Jim" in this song is not Croce. Ingrid Croce, who was married to Jim at the time of his death in 1973, told us: "Jim (Croce) sold air time for a radio station. It got solid airplay and national attention, which was followed by lots of positive press for the album. You Don't Mess Around With Jim wasn't released until nine months after it had been recorded, so Croce and his musical partner Maury Muehleisen had perfected the songs in performance. The You Don't Mess Around With Jim album was produced by Terry Cashman and Tommy West.

He left his wife, son, and an entire fanbase with both his new album, and a posthumous album later that same year.
