It was the title song in the 1952 Hollywood musical With a Song in My Heart, a biographical movie about Jane Froman, in which it was sung by Froman on the soundtrack for Susan Hayward. A recording with Perry Como, sung with choir and orchestra conducted by Henri René, was made in New York City on December 23, 1948 . It was covered by The Supremes on their album I Hear A Symphony - released in 1966 - and was re-recorded and featured on their 1967 tribute album to Rodgers & Hart titled The Supremes Sing Rodgers & Hart. Bing Crosby recorded the song in 1975 for his album At My Time of Life. The line "With a song in my heart" is performed by a male penguin in the animated film "Happy Feet" (2006).
Ellen Jane Froman (November 10, 1907 – April 22, 1980) was an American singer and actress. During her thirty-year career, Froman performed on stage, radio and television despite chronic health problems due to injuries sustained in a 1943 plane crash. Her life story was told in the 1952 film With a Song in My Heart. She was portrayed by Susan Hayward, who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance.

However, the show did contain one song that had a life of its own, "With a Song in My Heart," introduced by John Hundley and Lillian Taiz. Because of this song, Spring Is Here was filmed as a Hollywood musical under its own name in 1930 and then again as a short version entitled "Yours Sincerely" in 1933. In the meantime, popular singers and big bands had picked up on the song and it continued to be performed throughout the '30s and '40s. In 1952, it became the title song for a Hollywood musical version of the life of Jane Froman starring Susan Haywood
Jane Froman herself provided the vocals for With a Song in My Heart, with Susan Hayward doing a topnotch miming job. Watch for Robert Wagner in his starmaking cameo as a shell-shocked G. A tad bit overly sentimental. Susan Hayward cannot be blamed and makes the most of a contrived story. Wonderful music, great performances by Susan Hayward and Thelma Ritter.
