Jack Mercer And Mae Questel - Popeye: Songs Of Safety. Golden Records (2). US. Unknown.

Mae Questel /ˈmeɪ ˌkwɛˈstɛl/ (September 13, 1908 – January 4, 1998) was an American actress and voice actress best known for providing the voices for the animated characters Betty Boop and Olive Oyl. She began in vaudeville, and played occasional small roles in films and television later in her career, most notably the role of Aunt Bethany in 1989's National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

At age 65, I still say things under my breath that are direct quotes from popeye. Then when he would speak out loud, it was malapropisms stem to stern. These are the best Popeye's, the ones from the early 1960s. Why? The stories are more fun, wild, and diverse.

Jack Mercer Jack Ward. First regular Popeye the Sailor series entry in Technicolor (three two-reel Technicolor Popeye Color Specials were produced by Fleischer in the 1930s). One of four cartoons where Popeye's sailor outfit is blue. First entry of the 1943-44 film season. Original Paramount version restored and distributed by Turner. Despite the fact that Popeye and Bluto are wearing blue pants, it's possible that their navy sailor suits are blue.

Gravel-voiced Jack Mercer started voicing Popeye around 1935. Legend has it that once during an emergency, Questel even filled in and voiced Popeye herself! For many years Questel's main occupation was providing personae for more than 450 Popeye cartoons until they stopped making 'em in 1967. Years later Questel would also provide voice-overs for Parker Brothers' Popeye video game.

Differences in Popeye's story and characterization vary depending on the medium. Originally, Popeye got his strength from rubbing the head of the Whiffle Hen, changing to spinach by 1932. Swee'Pea is definitively Popeye's ward in the comic strips, but he is often depicted as belonging to Olive Oyl in cartoons. Jack Mercer, Mae Questel, and Jackson Beck returned for this series, which was produced by a number of companies, including Jack Kinney Productions, Rembrandt Films (William L. Snyder and Gene Deitch), Larry Harmon Productions, Halas and Batchelor, Paramount Cartoon Studios (formerly Famous Studios), and Southern Star Entertainment (formerly Southern Star Productions).

Voices of. Jack Mercer Mae Questel Jackson Beck. Popeye the Sailor aired in syndication in the US well into the 1990s. The episodes featured many characters from the original Thimble Theatre comic strip not seen in the theatrical series, including the Sea Hag, Toar, Rough House and King Blozo. Notably, Popeye the Sailor marked the final time Mae Questel would voice Olive Oyl. List of episodes (220).
